How to spot counterfeit cards at shows
Firstly, we have a zero-tolerance for counterfeit items at our card shows and we ask that you speak to a member of staff ASAP as we will take swift action. Dealers risk being banned from our card show for improper conduct.
That said, counterfeit cards do show up from time to time, especially at busy events, so it’s worth knowing a few simple checks before you buy.
Start with the overall look and feel. Genuine cards usually have consistent colours, sharp text, and a clean finish. If something looks off—washed-out colours, blurry details or unusual fonts—it’s a red flag. The texture can also give clues; authentic cards tend to have a specific finish that feels hard to replicate.
Next, check the card stock and thickness. Fake cards are often either too flimsy or slightly thicker than they should be. If you’re unsure, compare it to a card you know is genuine.
Pay attention to the print quality. Look closely at borders, logos, and small text. Counterfeits often have uneven edges, pixelation, or ink bleeding. A quick glance under good lighting can reveal a lot.
The light test can help for certain types of cards. Holding a card up to a light source may reveal differences in the inner layers—many authentic cards have a specific core that affects how light passes through.
Also consider the price and situation. If a deal seems too good to be true, it often is. Be cautious with high-value cards being sold far below market price, especially if the seller avoids questions or rushes the sale.
Finally, don’t hesitate to ask questions. Reputable vendors will be happy to explain where a card came from or let you inspect it more closely. If you’re still unsure, it’s okay to walk away.
A bit of caution goes a long way—taking a few extra seconds to check can save you from an expensive mistake.
