What questions to ask vendors about card condition

When buying cards at a show, especially higher-value singles, asking the right questions can help you avoid surprises later.

Start by asking about the card’s overall condition. A simple question like “How would you grade this card?” or “What condition would you list this as?” gives you a starting point and lets you compare their assessment with your own.

It’s also worth asking if there are any specific flaws. Try questions such as:

  • Are there any scratches, dents, or print lines?
  • How are the corners and edges?
  • Is there any whitening, surface wear, or centering issues?

For raw cards, ask whether the card has ever been considered for grading or if it has been pulled and sleeved straight away. Questions like “Has this been submitted before?” or “Was this pack fresh?” can sometimes provide useful background.

If you’re buying a slabbed or graded card, confirm details like:

  • Is the case in good condition?
  • Has the slab been checked for authenticity?

Always ask if you can inspect the card yourself before purchasing. Most reputable vendors are happy for buyers to look closely under proper lighting.

A quick conversation can reveal a lot—and helps you buy with more confidence.
